Last Week’s Market Activity

This past week, we saw quite a bit of green in the shortened first week of trading in 2025. We hope that you enjoyed your holidays and that you’re ready to get right back into the swing of things in the new year. We certainly are starting the year off with a bang, with some important economic data releases and earnings reports!

Macroeconomic Indicators

Unfortunately, last week, there weren’t many notable economic data releases. However, we can’t say the same for this week!

Upcoming Market Catalysts

We kick the new year off on Tuesday with the job openings report, followed by ADP employment, the minutes of the December FOMC meeting, and consumer credit on Wednesday. We then cap the week off on Friday with preliminary consumer sentiment for the month of January as well as the US employment report, unemployment rate, and hourly wages. It will be important to pay attention to pretty much every single economic data release this week, as they are all going to be strong indicators of how the overall economy and the individual consumer are faring!

Notable Earnings Releases

This week, Q4 earnings season kicks off with some of the big banks and several other companies reporting their earnings toward the end of the week, such as:

01/08 – Jefferies Financial Group (JEF), Albertsons Companies (ACI)

01/09 – Infosys Limited (INFY), Constellation Brands (STZ), Acuity Brands (AYI), Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA)

01/10 – Bank of America (BAC), Wells Fargo (WFC), BlackRock (BLK), Delta Air Lines (DAL), Wipro Limited (WIT)

This week, all eyes will be on the BAC and WFC. Analysts and retail investors alike will pay attention to what these banking giants have to say, as they will set the stage for the entirety of earnings season. It will be important to pay attention to what the CEOs of these companies have to say regarding the economy as a whole, the consumer, and the business environment. Both the earnings results and the commentary provided will set the stage for the next few weeks of earnings.
