Last Week’s Market Activity
Last week, we saw a tremendous amount of green in the markets, with both the Dow and the S&P seeing all-time highs. Additionally, the Nasdaq is not too far from an all-time high. However, Russell has been grossly underperforming the wider market, up just over 30% over the past five years. However, this week we will see if the indices continue to rocket upward, as we have some very influential companies reporting their earnings!
Macroeconomic Indicators
Last week, we saw some great news on the macroeconomic indicator front. Retail sales, home builder confidence, housing starts, building permits, and consumer sentiment all beat expectations, leading to a tremendous amount of positivity in the market. Existing home sales did come in a touch under expectations, but that did not seem to phase the market at all!
Upcoming Market Catalysts
This week, we have some rather important economic data releases, starting with preliminary Q4 GDP and new home sales on Thursday. On Friday, be sure to look out for personal income and spending, as well as PCE. Paying attention to PCE will be key, as we all know this is the Fed’s favorite measure of inflation!
Notable Earnings Releases
This week, Q4 earning continues, as some of the most influential companies in the world report their earnings, such as:
01/22 – Logitech International (LOGI), United Airlines Holdings (UAL)

01/26 – American Express Company (AXP), Colgate-Palmolive Company (CL), Norfolk Southern (NSC)
This week, all eyes will be on the first two big tech companies to report earnings this quarter, NFLX and TSLA. They will set the tone of the market for this entire earnings season, so it will be important to pay attention to what they have to say. If these companies report great earnings, prepare yourselves for the market to shoot higher. However, if they don’t, brace yourself, as we may be in for a bumpy ride.
You’ll also want to pay attention to the payment processors that are reporting earnings this week, V and AXP. These two companies process a tremendous amount of payments both domestically and throughout the world. This means they’ll be able to give some great insight as to how the consumer is faring throughout the world.
